The Band Stand

The Band Stand

In the early 20th century, the Dublin United Tramways Company paid brass bands about £4 to perform on the band stand outside the zoo. People would gather on a Sunday afternoon to hear the music, however, this came to an end at the beginning of the First World War, when most band members were called to join the army.

The band stand saw a revival in the 1990s with Sunday afternoon performances. The music played today in the band stand is usually more country and folk, as the brass band genre is not as popular as it was in years gone by.
