Soccer is just one of the many sports played in the Phoenix Park. Local clubs use the designated soccer pitches on the Fifteen Acres for matches and training. However, the pitches are open to the public and are a favourite hang out spot for the deer. The grounds have played host to many teams over the years and they were the site of the World Cup 2002 homecoming for the Irish Soccer Team.
Dublin soccer club, Bohemian FC, are one of the oldest football clubs in Ireland. They were founded in 1890 in a gate lodge beside the North Circular Road entrance and played their first match in the Polo Grounds. They remained playing in the Phoenix Park until the 1893/94 season. Bohemian FC currently play in Dalymount Park, Phibsborough, Dublin 7.
